The government has started a crackdown to flush out foreigners of Asian origin believed to have entered the country through the back door. Most of these foreigners are believed to be from Pakistan.
On the morning of Thursday, September 30, police and immigration department officers started implementing orders from Interior Principal Secretary, Karanja Kibicho, to crackdown on the immigrants.
The operation started at the Waiyaki Real Gardens located on Waiyaki Way and where a huge number of Asians were being hosted.
The law enforcement officers were inspecting documents from the foreigners, who PS Kibicho stated he believed were on transit from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia.
Videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed immigration staff and police verifying documents to ascertain that no immigrants had sneaked into the country.
PS Kibicho had earlier addressed the matter of foreigners in the country after Kenyans demanded answers following videos that showed city buses ferrying large numbers of immigrants to various city estates.
The Interior PS stated that the majority of these travelers originated from Pakistan and have valid Transit Visas to Saudi Arabia that are issued on arrival.
He admitted that in the past four months, Kenya has registered an influx in the number of Asian nationals transiting.
The Interior PS stated that the government will be strict going forward and will restrict the number of foreigners transiting through the country.
He noted that the government was worried over the high number of Asians transiting through the country due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
"Subsequently, the government has ordered an immediate crackdown of foreigners who are in the country without proper documentation. The exercise will be undertaken by the Department of Immigration and the National Police Service," the statement read in part.
"Going forward, the government will restrict the number of foreigners transiting through the country to levels that do not pose a risk to Kenya's national interests."
