A 10-year-old on Sunday, January 2, counted himself lucky after he narrowly escaped a fire that claimed the lives of his mother and two siblings.

Speaking to the media, Lugari Sub-County Police Commander, Bernard Musyoki, stated that the village was awakened by wails of the boy, alerting them that their house was on fire.

Musyoki revealed that the boy survived by jumping out of a window of the house that was engulfed in fire.

"When the fire razed the house, one of them managed to jump out of the window," the police commander stated.

Villagers responded to the distress call, and rushed him to the nearby hospital. He escaped the ordeal unhurt.

Efforts to rescue his mother and siblings, aged five and one and a half, proved futile as they perished in the inferno.

Reports revealed that the 35-year-old woman resorted to taking her life and that of her children due to a dispute between her and her husband.

Musyoki confirmed that the deceased, Helen Vuyanzi, and her husband had an earlier confrontation about his alleged infidelity with her close friend.

Despite the two making amends, Vuyanzi was still aggrieved. She bought petrol from the nearby shopping centre before she headed home, locked her self and her children before setting her house on fire.

"When we arrived at the scene, the house had been razed down. They had been burn beyond recognition," a witnesses claimed.

The remains of the three were taken to the Webuye county funeral home.
