Retired Ambassador Nicholas Mugo, the husband to Jubilee Nominated Senator, Beth Mugo is dead.
In a statement issued to the media, his family confirmed that he died at the Nairobi Hospital on Thursday, February 3.
The 86-year-old died while receiving treatment after a prolonged illness. Mugo, will be cremated on Friday, February 4 in a private ceremony.
“With profound sadness and sorrow, I wish to announce the death of my husband, Amb. Nicholas Mugo, that happened early this morning at the Nairobi Hospital after a long illness,” Mugo's statement read in part.
The Mugos had in 2019 celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in a colourful ceremony attended by the Senator's cousin - President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Uhuru sent a message of condolence to the Mugo family. He eulogised the late Mugo as a patriotic and dedicated person who was among the few Kenyans that played a leading role in laying a firm foundation for the country’s progress.
“We will forever cherish Mr. Nicholas Mugo’s contribution in laying a strong foundation for this country’s progress. We appreciate that during our early days of independence, he was able to represent our nation as a diplomat in the United Kingdom and later at the UN General Assembly where, together with other Kenyans, he effectively represented Kenya’s interests at the global arena.
"At this hour of mourning, I pray that the Almighty God will give Senator Beth Mugo and her family the strength and grace to bear the loss of their patriarch,” wrote the President.
Born in Gatundu, Mugo attended Kagumo High School. He was among the first Kenyans to attain a university education having being part of the pioneer group of Kenyan students that secured scholarships to study in America.
The partnership between the late Tom Mboya, the late Dr Julius Kiano and the late John F. Kennedy, the then President of the United States of America (USA), saw him join Warren Wilson College in North Carolina.
While still in the US, Kenya's founding father, the late President Jomo Kenyatta, called upon Kenyan students who were studying abroad and had attained their first degree to return home and serve the country.
Mugo and other students including the Royal Media Services (RMS) Chairman, Samuel Macahria were appointed to various positions. He was recruited to join the East African Community (EAC).
He was first appointed as High Commissioner to London in 1969. The ex-Ambassador was named by Jomo Kenyatta as Kenya's ambassador to Ethiopia in 1973.
The Ambassador then moved to Sudan, France and Eugoslavia, serving in the same capacity before retiring in 1978. He shifted his focus on the family business and supported his wife's political career.
