Police in Meru have arrested their fellow officer suspected of killing his colleague and injuring his senior on Tuesday night, February 22 at around 2100hrs.
The officer attached at Kaongo Kampio General Service Unit camp was said to have shot his colleague in the head before running away with his rifle, loaded with at least 17 rounds of ammunition.
His senior officer sustained injuries on his left hand. Detectives, nonetheless, did not disclose the severity of the wounds.
Emergency service providers rushed him to a local hospital where he was admitted and attended to by medics.
The body of the deceased was also ferried to a local morgue, pending an autopsy.
Detectives who visited the scene of the incident stated that they collected 13 spent cartridges. Police have not yet established the motive behind the incident, but immediately commenced with investigations.
The crime scene was also sealed to secure evidence as investigations into the matter continues.
The suspect, a junior officer was arrested on Wednesday morning and his G3 retrieved after a multi-agency team was sent to comb the area and track him down.
A ballistic analysis will be conducted on the gun to ascertain whether it was used at the crime scene.
In a similar incident in August 2021, a police officer was accused of shooting dead his colleague at a police station in Laikipia.
The suspect was said to have run away with a loaded AK-47 rifle shortly after the incident.
“The incident occurred at their residence in the police lines,” read a police report. The motive behind the shooting was however not established.
