Grief has engulfed residents of Ndenderu in Kiambu after two people died following a Sunday morning accident that occurred when a lorry ploughed into a crowd at the busy shopping centre.
Reports indicate that the driver of the lorry lost control and rammed a nearby Boda Boda rider and a fruit vendor who were at the edge of the newly-built Limuru-Ndenderu roundabout. The two lost their lives.
Residents who spoke to the media urged the government to mark the road, construct a footbridge, and erect bumps in order to prevent loss of lives at black spot.
"This road has been a black spot as it has claimed lots of lives in the recent past. For instance, I lost my cousin due to an accident at the same spot."
So, I'm urging the government to look into our plea as we have nearby schools such as Ndenderu primary. So this invokes fear in parents who fear that their children may be caught up in an accident at this hotspot," a resident informed the media.
"The government should erect bumps and put signage on this road as this would have prevented the morning tragedy that has claimed two lives," another resident stated.
Witnesses at the scene also urged the government to prioritise the roundabout road in order to prevent further accidents.
This comes as National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recently released a report entailing the roads that recorded the highest fatalities in 2021.
Outering Road was the most dangerous roadway in Nairobi with 44 fatalities, followed by Waiyaki Way (38). Mombasa Road and Northern Bypass recorded 29 fatal cases each while Southern Bypass had 28 cases.
NTSA Director General George Njao recently stated that the Authority had embarked on conducting road safety learning programmes in institutions across the country in a bid to curb the high fatalities.
"We aim to roll out the safety programme to more than 1,000 schools on the highways following rising road accidents," he stated.
