Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP) Moses Kuria has responded to claims by President Uhuru Kenyatta that his Deputy, William Ruto, tried to overthrow his government.
In a public statement issued on Sunday, March 27, Kuria argued that an alleged attempt by Ruto to unseat Uhuru was not reason enough for the president to completely cut ties with the DP.
He opined that the Head of State had faced what he claimed was a public intent to undermine his government but managed to look past it.
The vocal legislator referred to the mock swearing-in of the Former Prime Minister as the people's president on January 30, 2018 at Uhuru Park, and opined that if Uhuru could now support Odinga's presidential bid, then he should do the same for Ruto.
"What's wrong with trying to overthrow a government? Raila tried it in open fields on January 30th, 2018 at Uhuru Park and got promoted to my brother. Why not promote Ruto as well?" Kuria posed.
Kuria's remarks come a day after President Kenyatta, while in a meeting at State House Nairobi, finally opened up about what caused the bad blood between him and Ruto.
The outgoing president accused Ruto of masterminding his ouster through impeachment and sabotage. He added that the DP, driven by a high quest for power was out to undermine his authority by breaking Jubilee from within.
In an elaborate plan dating back to 2017, Ruto is said to have ensured that Uhuru's most loyal followers lost elective seats in the General Election. His boss further blamed him for orchestrating rebellion from within the ruling party.
Uhuru explained that he had to bring in Odinga, his bitter rival in the 2017 poll, to work with him through the March 2018 cooperation pact dubbed the handshake. This, in a bid to stabilize his government and derail Ruto's grand scheme to bring him down.
On February 23, in a meeting with leaders from the Mount Kenya region at the Sagana State Lodge, President Kenyatta officially declared his support for Raila 's presidential bid to succeed him.
Uhuru's handshake partner, will be running under the Azimio la Umoja political movement. The Jubilee party leader has since been rallying Kenyans from across the country to support the ODM party leader.
Narc Kenya Party leader, Martha Karua, is the latest high profile leader to join Azimio la Umoja, with Kuria remaining adamant that he will not join Odinga's camp.
