Kirinyaga governor, Anne Mumbi Waiguru, has successfully defended her seat.

Waiguru, who contested on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA), floored her fierce competitor and outgoing Woman Representative, Purity Wangui Ngirici, who run as an independent.

Waiguru got 113,088 votes against Ngirici's 105,677 votes.

Prior to Waiguru's declaration as the winner, the two politicians were involved in a bitter exchange with each accusing the other of rigging the polls.

In her acceptance speech, Waiguru termed her win as a miracle, admitting that the days leading to the announcement were not easy.

"It is just a miracle that I made it and I want to first start by thanking God because if it was not for his strength, ability, wisdom, favour and grace upon me, I would not have been able to be here.

"I also want to thank the people of Kirinyaga because of the confidence that you have shown in me, let my work speak for me," Waiguru stated.

The governor-elect also gave a special tribute to her family, especially her husband, for providing giving her the much-needed social support during the tense period.

"I want to sincerely thank, from the bottom of my heart, the very best of husbands someone can have, Kamotho Waiganjo. If it was not for him, I wouldn't have made it past these five days," Waiguru added.

The formal declaration by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) comes a day after Azimio presidential running mate, Martha Karua, publicly congratulated Ngirici for 'winning' before the formal results were declared.

"Congratulations Ngirici. Your win is of great significance," wrote Karua in a tweet that has since been flagged.

IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati, warned politicians and Kenyans against declaring results until its officials formally declare the winner and issue a certificate to elected politicians.
