Tiaty Member of Parliament (MP)-elect William Kamket, who vied on a KANU party ticket, has defected to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

President-elect William Ruto on Thursday, September 1 made the announcement, welcoming Kamket in his camp at his Karen office in Nairobi.

"Working together is imperative for the full realization of the economic objectives we promised the people of Kenya. I am pleased to welcome Tiaty MP William Kamket to Kenya Kwanza," Ruto wrote.

Kamket was the only KANU candidate who survived the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) wave in Baringo County, the home of its party leader, Gideon Moi.

Moi himself was a casualty, after he was floored by UDA's William Cheptumo. Cheptumo garnered 141,777 votes, with the outgoing senator coming a distant second with 71,480 votes.

KANU further suffered another heavy loss, when the late President Daniel Arap Moi's son Raymond was dethroned in the hotly- contested Rongai parliamentary seat in Nakuru county.

Raymond, who was seeking a third term in office, lost to outgoing MCA, Paul Chebor. The lawmaker bagged 14,725 against Cheboi's 27,021 votes in the mini-poll conducted on August 29.

In the run up to the Rongai contest, Moi's long serving pressman and aide Lee Njiru campaigned for Chebor, explaining that the UDA wave in the Rift valley was too strong and would sweep anyone resisting it.

KANU Secretary-General Nick Salat also lost in the Bomet East parliamentary race. Following Kamket's deflection, the number of KANU MPs-elect in the Azimio camp dropped to three.

Among those left include Naisula Lesuuda (Samburu West), Julius Ole Sunkuli (Kilgoris), Wario Guye Adhe (North Horr) and Jackson Lekumontare (Sambura East).

Tana River Woman Representative Amina Abdullahi  also won on a KANU ticket.

The defection will tilt the numbers of MPs allied to various coalitions, with Azimio and Kenya Kwanza, seeking to control in the National Assembly.
