Police have launched a manhunt after three murder inmates staged a daring escape in a second attempt from the prison facilities.

The prisoners who escaped at 4 am on the morning of Monday, October 10 had been convicted of murder and violence and were to appear before the Kerugoya High court on Tuesday.

However, one inmate was re-arrested while the other two are still at large. The inmates had been accused of Killing a Kirinyaga University student early this year.

The prison break prompted the Commissioner General of Kenya Prisons, Brigadier Rtd John Warioba to visit the Kerugoya police station to establish the cause of escape for the two inmates.

A number of prison break incidents have been reported this year amid efforts to address the gaps in correctional facilities.

Three fugitives escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison causing panic in the entire country but would later be arrested in Kitui on their way to Somalia.

Following their escape on November 14, President Uhuru Kenyatta held a crisis meeting at State House with all high-security officials.

The President also ordered the State Department of Correctional Services to sanction disciplinary action against all Kenya Prisons Service personnel who were on duty when the security breach occurred.

The escape led to heavily armed detectives raiding Magereza House and whisked away the prison boss away after which they accompanied him home.

The events saw Commissioner-General of prison Wycliffe Ogallo sacked by former president Uhuru Kenyatta and would later appoint Brigadier (Rtd) John  Warioba to succeed him.

Uhuru also ordered Prisons to sanction disciplinary action against all personnel who were on duty when the security breach occurred.

The escape from prisons has been blamed on the laxity of the wardens and their failure to watch the movement of inmates.
