The United Kingdom Minister of Armed Forces James Heappey on Wednesday, November 23, promised to expedite investigations into the death of a woman allegedly killed by UK soldiers and her body dumped in a septic tank in Nanyuki.
The UK minister who spoke in a meeting with the Leader of the Majority Kimani Ichung'wah and Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro noted that Britain was ready to take responsibility if the investigations establish that its soldier is liable.
He expressed his dissatisfaction with the pace of the investigations into the matter noting that it had delayed justice for the slain woman.
He pledged to work in synergy with the Attorney General to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to book.
"We want this matter resolved once and for all. We have nothing to hide. If the evidence shows that the individual was culpable then he is yours to extradite," The UK minister noted.
Further, the minister noted that he would meet Attorney General Justin Muturi to deliberate on the course of action regarding the protracted matter.
He also pledged to ensure that the soldiers respect the people and the culture of the native community in Nanyuki while going about their business.
Ichung'wah welcomed the move and called for better cooperation between the armed forces and locals.
The death of Wanjiru sparked widespread condemnation after it was alleged that she had been in the company of the soldiers in the moments preceding her death.
However, the suspects went out of reach of Kenyan detectives as they returned to their nation before her body was discovered in March 2012.
The mysterious death of Wanjiru is one of the scandals surrounding the operations of the UK forces who hold training sessions in Nanyuki.
In 2021, the UK minister of the Armed Forces visited Kenya to meet with the relevant institutions as they sought to find answers regarding Wanjiru's death.
