Bus Full of Passengers Plunges Into Kisii River

Update: 1:50 pm; Four people were on Saturday admitted to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) after the Guardian Angel bus they were travelling in plunged into a river in Kisii town.


A passenger bus belonging to the Guardian Bus Service plunged into the river at Nyamarambe in Kisii County.



An official from Guardian's Kisii office confirmed the Saturday morning, November 26 accident while speaking to Kenyans.co.ke.

She, however, did not clarify the number of passengers or those injured, nor if any deaths were recorded.  

"I am rushing to the scene and I will update you. But I can confirm that the accident has occurred," she stated. 

The cause of the accident was yet to be established by the time of publishing. 

Area residents and emergency service providers rescued passengers who were injured.

A similar accident occurred at the same spot on November 18, 2016, when Nyamira Express Bus and Toyota Fielder collided.

Two people were seriously injured in the accident, leaving the Fielder car destroyed at the rear.

As of September 26, 2022, the country had registered about a 20 per cent increase in the number of passengers involved in road traffic accidents, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority.

Pedestrian accidents increased by 10 per cent, followed by motorcyclists, drivers, pillion passengers and pedal cyclists.

NTSA added that the total number of victims of road accidents from January to October 30, 2022, increased to 17,550 from 16,642 in a similar period in 2021.
