Benson Kipruto, born on March 17, 1991, is a Kenyan long-distance runner and Olympic bronze medallist in the marathon.
He is a four-time winner of the World Marathon Majors, having won the 2021 Boston Marathon, the 2022 Chicago Marathon, the 2024 Tokyo Marathon, and the 2025 New York City Marathon.
Kipruto has continued to cement his reputation as one of Kenya’s top long-distance runners in 2025, consistently performing in local and international marathons. His impact extends beyond athletics, inspiring young runners to pursue careers in competitive sports.
In 2023, he finished second in the Chicago Marathon, setting a personal best time of 2:04:02, just three minutes behind compatriot Kelvin Kiptum, who broke the world marathon record.
Kipruto also won the 2018 Toronto Waterfront Marathon with a time of 2:07:24 and the 2021 Prague Marathon, clocking 2:10:16.
At the Paris Olympic Games, Kipruto claimed a bronze medal in the marathon, finishing ahead of his mentor, Eliud Kipchoge.
Before venturing into athletics, Kipruto worked as a shopkeeper in his hometown after completing his secondary education.
Kipruto is the younger brother of Dickson Chumba, an accomplished athlete and winner of the 2014 Tokyo Marathon and the 2015 Chicago Marathon.
In October of this year, Kipruto was nominated for the World Athletics Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year award.
As the reigning Tokyo Marathon champion, Kipruto is competing in the male category against Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, Ecuador’s Brian Pintado, and Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola and Yomif Kejelcha.
