Gideon Muriuki

Dr Gideon Muriuki is the Group Managing Director and the Chief Executive Officer of Co-operative Bank.

He has over 30 years of experience in the banking industry and has served as Co-op MD since 2021.

Under his leadership, the financial institution scooped the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) 2023 Sustainable Finance Catalyst Award in November.

During the award ceremony, the bank was feted for striking the perfect balance between fostering a sustainable business model and prioritising the nation's future imperatives along with social and environmental concerns.

The lender was also recognised as the Best MSMEs financier at the Global SME Finance Awards 2023.

In November, the bank reported a 7.5 per cent increase in profit after tax to Ksh18.4 billion for the third quarter of 2023.

The bank's milestones have culminated in Muriuki being feted as the best CEO in the African banking industry during the Africa Banking Awards in 2021 where he was recognised for retaining the bank's staff despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

He is also a recipient of the Chevalier de L’ordre National du Burkina Faso conferred to him by the President of Burkina Faso and the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) here in Kenya.
