Irene Weru is a clinician and pharmacist who specialises in oncology. Oncology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancerous tumours.
She serves as the head of clinical pharmacy at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi. She has over 16 years of experience working in cancer care.
At KNH, which is Kenya’s largest teaching and referral hospital, Weru oversees how cancer medicines and treatment, including chemotherapy, are handled. Creating strict safety protocols for how the treatment is administered.
In 2025, Weru was honoured with the Helen McKinnon Award by the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners (ISOPP).
The award is granted to people who have made significant contributions to oncology pharmacy practice.
She represented Africa in advocating for global cancer care, policy-based research, and education.
