Jackie Odhiambo is an activist and community worker who founded and leads Nyanam Widows Rising.
The organisation trains and supports widows to lead change in their communities. Brought up by a widowed woman, Jackie has let her childhood experience shape her work.
She studied at Williams College and earned a master’s in international public health. She is also doing a PhD focused on widowhood stigma.
Her work focuses on health, justice, leadership, and economic life. The programme helps widows claim rights and find a steady income. This has helped many widows regain land, status and hope.
Odhiambo's relentless pursuit of equality has earned her international recognition, culminating in the prestigious 2025 Fighting for Fairness Award from the Segal Family Foundation, an honour that spotlights African changemakers driving impact from the ground up.
Her efforts have also seen her named a 2025 African Visionary Fellow, further solidifying her status as a pioneering force for change.
Beyond her accolades from the Segal Family Foundation, Odhiambo's innovative approach has been lauded by other key institutions. The esteemed Williams College in the U.S., where she completed her undergraduate studies, honoured her with a 2025 Bicentennial Medal, a recognition of her outstanding achievements and contributions to society.
On a national level, her dedication to empowering women was recognised with the 2020 Zuri Award for Public Service, celebrating her leadership and the positive change she has initiated within her communities.
Furthermore, her foundation was acknowledged with the 2025 FIDA-Kenya Affirmative Action Award for its commitment to equipping widows with leadership tools, demonstrating the widespread impact and recognition of her vital work.
