Josephine Kulea is an activist in Samburu County who is spearheading efforts to empower girls and women.
Kulea is fighting harmful cultural practices and promoting education for vulnerable children, especially girls, in the county.
She founded the Samburu Girls Foundation (SGF), which rescues girls from FGM, child marriage, and provides shelters and education for them.
Kulea’s work also includes other humanitarian efforts, such as distributing blankets, food, and essential items to vulnerable families across Samburu, helping communities facing drought and poverty.
Furthermore, Kulea advocates for women’s participation in governance and local leadership.
In 2025, she was named a national heroine by the President during Mashujaa Day celebrations, receiving recognition in the Human Rights category for her work advancing women’s rights.
