Maxwell Opondo

Maxwell Opondo, a 21-year-old Kenyan innovator, has emerged as one of Africa’s most promising young industrialists in 2025, earning global recognition for his groundbreaking work in assistive technology.

As the founder and CEO of Zerobionic, a Nairobi-based tech startup, Opondo has combined artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to create life-changing solutions for persons with disabilities.

In 2025, he won the prestigious Young Tech Innovator Award at the Africa Tech Summit for developing a motorised prosthetic arm that translates spoken words into sign language in real time. This revolutionary innovation, powered by AI algorithms and sensory integration, aims to bridge communication barriers between the hearing and the deaf communities.

In late 2024, he was also crowned at the Reimagine Education Awards 2024 as a Gold Winner for developing robotics solutions that make STEM education accessible to students with hearing impairments, addressing barriers in learning, and promoting inclusion through robotics.

His invention has positioned Kenya as a leader in inclusive technology, drawing international attention from organisations such as NVIDIA and other global tech partners.

Beyond the innovation itself, his journey symbolises the rise of a new generation of Kenyan entrepreneurs who are keen on driving industrial transformation through technology.

In recognition of his contribution to industrial innovation and social inclusion, Opondo, who is yet to complete his undergraduate studies, has been celebrated across Africa’s tech community and featured in industry publications for pushing the boundaries of homegrown innovations.
