The ‘bad gyal’ of Kenyan politics. Honestly, where do we begin? Since she entered Kenyan politics as a nominated MP in 2007, Millie has gone from strength to strength, and this was clearly on display in 2024.
Millie is a vocal advocate for women’s rights and has been instrumental in pushing for progressive laws related to gender equality and children's welfare. Her legislative work includes efforts to improve laws on domestic violence, reproductive health, and child protection.
To this effect, Millie sponsored various legislative bills relating to reproductive health in Parliament. She championed the Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill, aimed at regulating the use of technology to address infertility issues. The bill included provisions for sperm and egg donation, surrogacy, and ethical guidelines for unused embryos, addressing gaps in Kenyan law on reproductive technology.
Additionally, she advocated for the Family Reproductive Health Care Bill, which sought to enhance access to preconception information and support for individuals with fertility challenges.
In 2024, Millie took her advocacy efforts up a notch by championing stronger protections for survivors of gender-based violence and measures to improve the representation of women and marginalised groups in governance.
She was particularly vocal about the femicide scourge witnessed in Kenya and challenged MPs and other Kenyan leaders to stand up for women. Furthermore, she advocated for investigations and the prosecution of those behind these heinous acts, using her platform as an MP to raise awareness on the issue.
In July 2024, the seasoned legislator and Member of Parliament for Suba North was appointed the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) Minority Whip in the National Assembly, a significant position that highlights her prominence within her party.
The role involves coordinating and rallying opposition MPs to uphold party policies in legislative matters.
2024 also marked Millie’s recognition as a published author. She launched her debut political book, Rig or Be Rigged, in October 2024. The book explores her political journey, Kenya’s electoral challenges, and her fight for justice and representation.
The well-attended event included notable figures such as Martha Karua and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, further underlining her respected position in Kenyan politics.
All in all, Millie Odhiambo’s contributions in 2024 reflected her enduring dedication to progressive politics and her commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices in Kenya, earning her a well-deserved entry in our Top 100 Kenyans list.
