Kenya is gearing up to host the International Flower Trade Exhibition (IFTEX) once again in Nairobi from June 4 to 6, 2024, solidifying its status as a global powerhouse in the flower trade. The event points to Kenya’s rising dominance in the sector, with organisers voicing confidence in the nation's capacity to navigate industry challenges and uphold its pivotal role.

IFTEX organiser Dick Raamsdonk pointed to Kenya’s resilience in the face of global adversities, citing the country's consistent introduction of new flower varieties as a key factor in attracting buyers worldwide. "The flower industry is like fashion," remarked Raamsdonk. "Consumers are always seeking novelty – be it colours, shapes, names, or stem lengths."

Kenya's competitive edge in flower production stems from a combination of factors, including advanced techniques, favourable tropical climates, varied altitudes, and a readily available workforce. According to Raamsdonk, these elements position Kenya as a primary supplier of high-quality flowers throughout the year.

The upcoming IFTEX marks its 11th edition since its inception in 2012, coinciding with Kenya's evolution into a major producer and burgeoning flower logistics hub. The concept of "packed at source" has gained momentum, leading to increased value addition within the country and the generation of additional employment opportunities. Raamsdonk envisions Kenya as a central hub for the flower business in the future.
