Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are holding 3 members of a gang that reportedly stole four cars from a showroom in Mombasa.

The agency, in a statement on Tuesday, indicated that the three were members of a 4-member syndicate behind a spate of robberies of cars on sale in showrooms.

The trio was arrested at Kadzandani area, Malindi store yard belonging to the fourth member who is still at large.

The detectives revealed that the syndicate was behind several other robberies of car owners.

"Four members of a motor vehicle theft syndicate that has been terrorizing Mombasa County dwellers have today been arrested by a joint team of detectives based at the County's headquarters and DCI Urban," he stated.

"The intelligence-led operation in which they were rounded up also saw the recovery of three motor vehicles; a white Toyota Succeed, a silver Toyota Passo, and a black Nissan Note. The three had been stolen from the Kainat Trading Ltd Showroom in the Ganjoni area."

A manhunt was launched to recover more vehicles the gang stole and apprehend the yard owner who went into hiding.

Separately, detectives drawn from the Transnational Organised Crimes and Anti-Narcotics Unit recovered 12 sacks of Cannabis sativa and six sets of car number plates from the house of a notorious trafficker.

The burst was realised shortly after the agency's officers intercepted another 50 sacks of the same drug along the Kisii-Rongo highway.

According to the officers, the suspect had been temporarily released from Muthaiga police cells for a search in his Utawala AP Stage house, where the recoveries were made including a digital weighing scale.

"Besides concealing the identities of his accomplices who are believed to have holed up upon his arrest, the suspect also refused to sign the inventory of the recoveries seized from his house," DCI revealed.

"Investigative interviewing is however ongoing with a view to establish the recipients of his supplies."
