The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday, March 5, detailed how its officers nabbed a suspected drug ring near Multimedia University last week.
In a statement, the DCI detailed that an elite team, on the date of operation, was deployed along the Ongata Rongai Road where a vehicle that was ferrying suspected drug dealers was intercepted.
Police detailed that the elite team, which was drawn from the anti-narcotics division was also supported by the Operations Support Unit to enhance efficiency.
At the time of the operation, DCI indicated that the vehicle was near the institution of higher learning and had a female and two male occupants onboard.
The occupants were immediately ejected from the vehicle with the officers carrying out a thorough search on the saloon car.
DCI detailed that the operation led to the discovery of bhang which was wrapped in two sacks that were hidden in the vehicle's trunk.
"A search conducted in the vehicle saw four bales of bhang stashed on two sacks recovered, and another two bales were discovered at the home of one of the suspects when the investigations were extended there," the DCI stated.
Police added that the the drugs were immediately entered into evidence and custodial orders were sought to weigh and sample the drugs.
However, the police did not reveal the net worth of the drugs that were seized.
Following successful investigations, DCI noted that the suspects will be arraigned in Court on Thursday, March 7, 2024, to take a plea on drug-related charges.
The arrest of the trio comes amidst an intensified crackdown on the drug trade within Nairobi and the surrounding counties.
In a similar operation that was conducted in Migori County on February 20, a woman was arrested after she was linked to 531 kilograms of bhang which was seized at a home. DCI estimated the street value of the drugs at Ksh19 million.
"She was nabbed at the said homestead in an operation conducted by a joint team of DCI detectives backed up by their K9 Isebania Border Post counterparts.
"In the stealth operation, 9 sacks of Cannabis sativa sticks and another 8 containing the unrefined drug were found at various concealed spots by the help of a sniffer dog," the DCI stated.
