Detectives drawn from the elite Anti-Narcotics and the Operations Support Unit division of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) conducted a drug burst along the Thika-Garissa Highway on Thursday night after receiving intelligence.
In a statement released on Saturday, DCI revealed that it had received intel from their source over bales of bhang that were being transported by a lorry.
Further, DCI documented that the officers immediately ambushed the lorry after locating it on the highway, prompting a search.
To the shock of the detectives, the lorry had been filled with mattresses with the driver claiming that he was delivering supplies to some of their customers.
However, informed by their intelligence, the detectives did a further search on the vehicle and discovered that the lorry had been modified.
"In the intelligence-led operation conducted by a joint operation team, an Isuzu truck was searched where an initial 28 bales were found on the roof cabin of the vehicle before it was escorted to DCI Headquarters for further processing by the Anti-Narcotics detectives.
"A thorough search revealed that the vehicle had a false bottom reinforced with strong bolts and rails, where 104 bales had been stashed. To reduce chances of suspicion, the vehicle carried 31 mattresses which the driver claimed to have been delivering to waiting customers," read the statement in part.
Following the discovery, the driver and the other occupant of the vehicle were placed under arrest and taken to the Muthaiga Police Station for questioning.
DCI indicated that they were in the process of weighing and sampling the drugs before the duo could be taken to court.
In the meantime, the investigative agency noted that it had stepped up its operations to weed out drug dealers.
In a similar operation within Nairobi, a 51-year-old woman and a middle-aged man were arrested after police discovered sachets of heroin weighing 650g in their house in Fedha, Embakasi.
"They were escorted to Muthaiga Police Station pending processing and arraignment," the DCI added.
