Police officers on Saturday, November 14, busted a criminal gang that had been transporting drugs concealed in the body of a lorry to avoid detection.
The traffickers created a false body in the carrier compartment of the vehicle leaving a space with the decor inner lining to stuff the bags of drugs in.
The police in a sting operation had to weld the body of the lorry to unravel the drug stash.
"Investigations have revealed that the proceeds of the sale of such drugs have a direct link with funding of terror activities within this region," Deputy Director Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) Janet Shako stated.
In clothing
In a previous operation in October 2020, ANU detectives based at JKIA saw the confiscation of unestablished amounts of heroin and cocaine en route from Juba and Entebbe to Cambodia and France respectively
The search conducted at cargo shed in DHL Warehouse led to the recovery of two suspicious consignments, the first one described as clothes for personal use and on transit from Juba to Cambodia, while the second had a dress concealing the bhang en route to France.
On opening the first consignment, three blouses each with 8 large buttons and three skirts each having 17 buttons were found, where on dismantling the buttons each was found to contain a powdery substance, which upon testing, turned to be heroin.
Both consignments were seized for further investigations.
In car tyres
Criminals have also sought to conceal the drugs in the tyres. Police however in 2019 unearthed 5kgs of bhang that was hidden in tyres of a moving car in Marsabit.
The bhang valued at Ksh 200,000 was cleverly hidden in the rear tyres of the Toyota Alphard.
Two people associated with the vehicle, Daniel Njuguna (driver), Boniface Muthee (owner) and three other suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.
The police revealed that they flagged down the vehicle for traffic check when they smelt bhang but could not tell exactly where it was emanating from.
That was when they took the car to the police station for further investigations when the illegal drug was discovered in its rear wheels.
In fruits
In February 2019, a team of detectives seized five kilos of heroin and arrested a major heroin trafficker in Westlands, Nairobi who had concealed the drugs in paws paw fruits.
The officers at the anti-narcotics police stated that the suspect was part of a larger heroin distribution network in Nairobi.
