Police officers on Wednesday, May 29, nabbed a suspected drug baron ferrying 327 kilograms of narcotics with an estimated street value of Ksh9 million along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the officers, who acted on a tip-off from the public, were dispatched to the scene to apprehend the suspect.
They also informed the Northern Corridor Transit Patrol Unit (NCTPU) that the suspect was driving a black Land Cruiser Prado headed towards Mombasa from Nairobi.
Under the traffic department within the Kenya Police Service, the unit is mandated to secure motor vehicles plying the route from the Mombasa Port to Malaba border, Isebania through to the Busia border.
To nab the suspect, NCTPU manufactured a traffic jam in the Ikanga area and positioned officers strategically with the sole intention of intercepting the vehicle.
Upon reaching the area, the suspect was astonished to find traffic at a standstill.
Suspecting that he had been cornered, the suspect made a u-turn but was, however, intercepted by the officers who ordered him to pull up.
"He was flagged down and ordered to switch off the engine and alight," the police report read in part.
Upon searching the vehicle, the police unit found 11 sacks stuffed with narcotics as well as 963 big rolls.
The detectives also recovered two spare number plates which were seized as exhibits.
The Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer in Voi (SCCIO) and his team arrived at the scene to document the events that transpired.
The driver, aged 45 years, was arrested and escorted to Voi Police Station. The vehicle was also towed to the station.
