A female Principal Magistrate, Monica Kivuti, was shot and injured at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi on Thursday, June 13.
According to reports, the magistrate was shot by a police officer. She was rushed to the hospital for emergency medical attention.
It's reported that the senior police officer opened fire while the Principal Magistrate was leading the court session. He shot her inflicting severe injuries.
After the shot was fired, other security personnel in the courtroom responded and shot the police officer.
Some images shared online indicated that a section of the courtroom was covered in blood.
This altercation disrupted Thursday's proceedings at the law courts where the magistrate was ruling on several cases.
Detectives arrived at the scene shortly after to investigate the matter with the key goal being to establish the motive of the shooting.
However, it is believed that the officer shot at the magistrate after she allegedly refused to grant his wife bond. Detectives and the Judiciary are yet to issue a statement on the matter.
The officer from Kisumu County came to Nairobi after learning about the court session where his wife was to appear. He reportedly wanted the wife to be released on bond while the case was ongoing.
Police moved the deceased's body to the local morgue awaiting an autopsy.
The magistrate was subsequently rushed to hospital for specialised treatment. Another civilian who was also injured during the incident was also rushed to hospital as well.
As investigations continue, security personnel have cordoned off the law courts from the general public. Officers from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) have also arrived at the scene.
