Mombasa Central Police Station OCS Peter Mugambi refuted appending his signature to the letter authorising Finance Bill demonstrations rocking the county.

While being confronted by the protesters on Wednesday, the OCS declared the protests illegal explaining that the participants were yet to lodge a formal application.

Mugambi, as a result, asked the protests who were confronting him to present him a letter before embarking on the demos.

"The OCS does not have a letter and if you want to do that (protest), you need to write a letter and take it to the station," he directed.

"I am the OCS and I do not have that letter you are claiming you sent. I am., therefore, declaring that there should be no protests. Let us be peaceful. If you want protests, write a letter to my office."

One of the protesters, however, presented a digital copy to the OCS who refuted receiving it and denied appending his signature.

"Do you know my signature? That does not belong to me," Kagambi fired back.

Protesters calling for the rejection of the Finance Bill 2024 in its entirety hit the streets of Mombasa to demonstrate even as Parliament debated on the proposals.

The police, however, retaliated by firing teargas at the protesters causing mayhem within the coastal city.

Yesterday, thousands of Kenyans, most of them from the younger Generation Z, protested the bill in Nairobi.

The police officers, however, retaliated by firing in the air and dispersing the crowds with teargas. Several reported injuries during the encounter.

Overall, more than 200 protesters were arrested attracting ire from the Law Society of Kenya which vowed to file a suit against Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei.

The protesters lamented that the proposed bill was punitive to citizens and were dissatisfied with the changes made to the bill by the National Assembly Finance Committee.
