The Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) has given the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) a 21-day ultimatum to conclude investigations into the death of a protestor who was shot on Thursday within the CBD during the Anti-Finance Bill protests.
In a press statement on Friday, the public prosecution authority directed the IPOA to carry out thorough investigations into the matter.
The IPOA will then be liable to give a detailed report to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) before three weeks lapses.
The authority confirmed to the public the death of the young protestor who was shot on Thursday during the Anti-Finance Bill peaceful demonstrations.
"Rex Kanyike Masai, aged 29 years old, was allegedly shot on Thursday 20th June 2024 within the Central Business District, Nairobi, and died while undergoing medical treatment at Bliss Health Care Centre, Moi Avenue." the statement read in part.
ODPP reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law while discharging its constitutional mandate.
The incident was reported to have been an alleged police shooting occurrence that happened within the Nairobi Central Business District during the Anti-Finance Bill protests.
After the shooting incident that was reportedly captured at night at around 7 pm, some of the protestors took the initiative of rushing the deceased to the hospital just before his demise.
Rex was confirmed dead a few minutes after being rushed to the medical facility in the CBD.
The aftermath of the Finance Bill demonstrations comes after several youths stormed the streets in various parts of the country pushing their area MPs to vote down the punitive controversial Finance Bill.
Several regions took to the streets to protest against the bill. In Nairobi, protesters threatened to storm the National Assembly building to warn MPs against passing the bill.
The Inspector General of police Japhet Koome issued a statement warning citizens against unauthorized access to the National Assembly.
The IG went ahead and directed the police to protect the parliamentarians from the wrath of demonstrators.
During the Thursday demonstrations police officers engaged in running battles with protesters in Nairobi and pelted tear gas canisters at them.
The protesters, who came out in large numbers, held up placards protesting the tax measures proposed by the government through the bill.
