The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has demanded comprehensive investigations into the shooting of Rex Masai within 21 days.

In a statement signed by LSK President Faith Odhiambo, the lawyers noted that the investigations would be crucial in identifying the officer who fired the fatal shot.

Therefore, they called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to collaborate with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) in conducting the investigations.

On the other hand, LSK noted that it was collecting relevant information regarding the shooting and would be pursuing the matter to its logical conclusion.

"The Law Society has been consistent in our resolve to stamp out impunity within our police and we have no intention of relenting. We have taken note of all reports that we have received on what occurred leading to the murder of Rex Kanyike Masai and all other overzealous force against the protesters," read the statement in part.

"We are working to ascertain the veracity of the information we have gathered and we demand that the DCI and IPOA cooperate in our efforts to unmask the perpetrators of this heinous act within 3 weeks."

Masai died after being shot in the thigh by a police officer during the Thursday, June 20 protests. The incident was also captured on video.

Meanwhile, the LSK cautioned the police to exercise restraint during the protest.

Protesters were also urged to continue exercising their constitutional rights during the protests while maintaining peace.

"As we fulfil our statutory mandate, we urge members of the public to continue to express themselves and exercise their rights within the confines of the law. We must deny aggressors any opportunity to justify their illegal actions," read the statement in part.

Protests are expected to continue on Tuesday, June 25 when the Finance Bill 2024 will proceed to the Committee Stage.
