Tonia Mutiso Appointed by Treasury CS Day After Owalo Revoked Appointment

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung'u on Friday appointed Tonia Mutiso as a member of the Nairobi International Financial Centre Authority for a period of three years.

In the Gazette Notice No. 7867, Ndung'u made the appointment adding that Mutiso will serve effectively from June 28.

"In exercise of powers conferred by section 8 (1) (e) of the Nairobi International Financial Centre Act, the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning appoints, Tonia Mutiso to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Nairobi International Financial Centre Authority, for a period of three years with effect from June 28, 2024," read part of the notice dated June 27.

As a member of the board, Mutiso alongside other board members is tasked with upholding the authority's objectives such as creating an efficient and predictable operating framework for firms and investors in Kenya and also deepening local and regional capital markets and creating a gateway to the continent's opportunities.

This came a day after ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo revoked her appointment as a member of the Communications Authority of Kenya. In the gazette notice No. 7871, Owalo revoked the appointment of three officials from the CAK board.

Besides Mutiso, Owalo revoked the appointment of Sarah Kabira and Albert Kochei Owalo and their in place appointed Ummu Bunu Haji Ahmed, and Musangi J. Mutua as members of the CAK board.

Mutiso's appointment revocation was announced in the same notice as her appointment to the docket under the Ministry of Treasury.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 6 (1) (e) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy appoints Ummu Bunu Haji Ahmed, and Musangi J. Mutua (Dr.), to be members of the Board of the Communications Authority of Kenya, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 28th June 2024. The appointment* of Sarah Kabira, Albert Kochei and Tonia Mutiso is revoked," read part of the notice dated June 27.

Mutiso was appointed in March 2023 to serve for three years before the recent development.

Additionally, the other two officials landed other roles in the Ministry of Education on the same day after their appointments were revoked.

Albert Kochei was appointed by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to serve as the Chairperson of the Council of the Multimedia University for three years with effect from June 28.

On the other hand, CS Machogu also appointed Sarak Kabira as a member of the Council of the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology for three years effective from June 28.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) (d) of the Universities Act, the Secretary for Education appoints Sarah Kabira to be a member of the Council of the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 28th June, 2024," read part of the notice dated June 27.
