Otiende Amollo to Head UK Election Observation Mission

Rarieda Member of Parliament (MP) Otiende Amollo will head the United Kingdom Election Observation Mission as the country heads to elections on Thursday, July 4. 

The Mission goal is to ensure observation of all aspects of the electoral process in accordance with international obligations, commitments and standards for democratic elections.

Amollo is in the United Kingdom at the invite and facilitation of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association(UK).

The Mission Comprises 19 States and Territories that were formally under British rule.

"I welcome this opportunity to work with Commonwealth parliamentarians to observe the 2024 General Election in the United Kingdom on 4 July,” Amollo spoke after being chosen to head the mission.

“I know from my own experience that election missions play an important role in strengthening democracies.”

He explained that his role with other colleagues would be to observe the democratic process, share our findings and make recommendations in line with international best practices.

The parliamentarians from the 18 nations in the mission were drawn from regions across the Commonwealth and were expected to be impartial observers of the voting process.

"We look forward to observing electoral practices in a variety of contexts, regions and nations, reflecting the diversity of the United Kingdom itself," Otiende remarked as Chair of the Election Observation Mission. 

Other parliamentarians in the mission were drawn from Malawi, St Lucia, the State of Alderney, New South Wales, Seychelles and Trinidad and Tobago. 

MPs from the State Assembly of Jersey, Grenada, Sri Lanka, Parliament of Turks and Caicos, Malta and Lesotho also made part of the Mission. 

The rest of the parliamentarians were drawn from Mauritius, the Parliament of Kitts and Nevis, the State of Deliberation in Guernsey, the Parliament of St Lucia, the Parliament of Anguilla and the United Kingdom.
