Protestors in Emali Town in Makueni County on Thursday, July 4, looted Eden Mart Supermarket stealing goods of unspecified amount.
It is reported that the supermarket is owned by an area politician who unsuccessfully vied for a parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election.
The protestors after looting the supermarket then marched to a nearby hotel and gained forceful entry where they ate everything.
The crowd comprised largely of youthful protestors went ahead to block the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
This was the second time in a week that protestors in Emali were cutting transport between Nairobi and Mombasa cities.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a source from Emali Town explained that the protests had now moved from the Finance Bill to local political fights.
“The protestors have split into two with both sides pledging alliance to different Kenya Kwanza politicians,” the source stated.
Most businesses remained closed as entrepreneurs feared for their lives and looting of their property.
Emali has seen the worst anti-government protest in the whole of the Lower Eastern region encompassing Machakos, Kitui and Makueni Counties.
On Tuesday, a young man died after falling from a lorry he was swinging on during the political protests.
Kibwezi West Constituency, where Emali is domiciled, was also the only constituency where a Member of Parliament received a hostile reception after voting for Yes in the now-retracted Finance Bill.
On Friday, June 28, the area MP Mwengi Mutuse was involved in a scuffle during a burial ceremony in the region.
He later released a statement where he refuted claims that he was beaten up, adding that Kibwezi West residents appreciated his Yes vote at the National Assembly.
Mwengi Mutuse was elected on a Maendeleo Chap Chap and pledged loyalty to President William Ruto shortly after the August 2022 general election.
