Parents with students at Mamunga Primary School in Voi, Taita Taveta County on Tuesday stormed the school demanding the resignation of the headteacher.

The parents disrupted learning at the school emphasising that they would not leave until their issues were resolved and demands met.

"We need to see evidence, let him bring receipts to justify that the toilet constructed was worth Ksh400,000. We need accountability," one of the parents remarked.

According to the parents, the headmaster and other officials in the school allegedly misappropriated funds meant for school development. Parents were also complaining about the mismanagement of the school.

The parents have called upon Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to intervene.

One of the parents complained that the school was demanding that each pupil must pay Ksh1,000 monthly for lunch, this amount disadvantaged pupils from low-income homes.

"All we are saying is that they should go, the treasurer, headmaster and their juniors. They sit in offices demanding a lot of money from us parents," one of the parents lamented.

Another parent added that the tendering process in the school was not transparent. They questioned who was supplying the goods for the school making them expensive.

Some of them opined that the headmaster and other officials were the suppliers of the items and were charging more than other suppliers in the market.

The parents also argued that some of the officials had been serving in the school for more than the required period as outlined in the law.

"The headteacher recycles and retains his preferred parent representatives in the board without consultation with other class or school parents," one of the parents noted.

Besides the headmaster's resignation within 14 days, the parents are demanding the establishment of a fresh parent association immediately, and doing away with the account clerks.

CS Machogu has been urged to step in to ensure their demands are met and a new headmaster is transferred to the school and guarantee accountability in learning institutions.
