The Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA) on Tuesday intervened in the case of a security guard, Vincent Chepkwony, who gained overnight popularity after being recorded on camera opening the doors of a popular restaurant to protestors at the height of the Anti-Finance Bill protests.
On Monday, media reports indicated that the security guard in question had been dismissed from his position at the company providing security services to the establishment.
In response, PSRA held a consultative meeting with Chepkwony and his employer to establish the facts behind the alleged dismissal.
Following the meeting held on Tuesday, the PSRA through a statement confirmed that the employer had agreed to reinstate the guard immediately deeming his actions to be heroic and commendable.
“After a comprehensive review, the Authority firmly concluded that Mr Chepkwony's actions were heroic, patriotic and commendable and therefore warranted a promotion and not a dismissal from duty,” stated PSRA.
PSRA further noted that Chepkwony’s actions not only saved lives but protected public property.
Additionally, Chepkwony received the highest commendation that could be awarded to a security guard in Kenya for his bravery and commitment to serving Kenyans.
“Mr Chepkwony has subsequently been awarded the highest commendation and recognition for a Private Security Officer in Kenya for his bravery and unwavering commitment to duty. His reinstatement stands as a testament to the core values that uphold the private security industry in Kenya, added PSRA.
The award was accompanied by a letter of appreciation from the government celebrating his achievement.
“This commendation is in recognition of your remarkable dedication and service in the Private Security Industry in the country.
“Your unwavering commitment, exceptional professionalism, and strict compliance with the legal standards have been instrumental in promoting the development of the Private Security Industry in Kenya,” read the letter.
