At least 17 young Kenyans were on Thursday arraigned before the Molo Law Courts and charged with vandalising, destroying and stealing items from the area MP Kuria Kimani on June 25.
The suspects were accused of destroying property valued at Ksh16 million including vehicles, livestock and furniture. They were also charged with stealing property during the anti-finance bill protests that rocked the country in the past few weeks.
However, the suspects denied all the charges against them and were released on a Ksh5,000 bond. This was after their lawyer applied to have them released.
An attorney in the case questioned some of the charges terming some of them as malicious. He argued that most of the suspects were law-abiding citizens.
The case will be mentioned on August 19, 2024.
According to the MP who chairs the National Assembly Finance Committee, rowdy Kenyans broke into his rural home over his stance on the now-withdrawn Finance Bill, 2024.
Kimani earlier revealed that the suspects burned two vehicles and damaged a third one, he lost 10,000 chickens, and six grade cows.
Additionally, 29 goats were stolen and two windows of his two-storey house vandalised.
After the incident, police began investigations to recover the livestock and arrest all those involved in the looting spree during the nationwide protests.
Kimani's house was among many other properties belonging to public officials which were destroyed on the said day. Parliament was also not spared as Kenyans breached security, destroyed property and set part of it on fire.
Aside from the 17, 16 others also accused of similar charges in Eldoret were also released on bond. The 16 were accused of stealing teams from the Timba XO club belonging to Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi.
The MP recently announced that he had forgiven all those involved adding that the nightclub would be closed indefinitely to pave the way for repairs.
