A tense standoff erupted in Gachie, Kiambu County, as residents camped at Kihara Police Station demanding the release of relief food.
Since 3am on Saturday, July 13, irate residents have surrounded the station, insisting on the immediate distribution of food aid that has been held there for over six months.
Videos circulating online depict the anger and frustration of the residents, who initially stormed the police station on Wednesday, demanding the food's release.
Their patience has been worn thin by the prolonged delay in distributing essential supplies meant for flood victims.
The residents' outcry was directed towards local MP John Njuguna, also known as Kawanjiku, urging him to expedite the distribution process.
Despite their pleas, the situation remained unresolved on both Wednesday and Saturday. On Saturday, rumours spread that the MP planned to relocate the food from the police station.
Determined to prevent this, a group of residents arrived at the station at the crack of dawn.
MP Njuguna Wanjiku eventually appeared at the station to address the agitated crowd.
He announced on his social media platform, “I am pleased to announce that we have reached a consensus on the modalities to ensure everyone who deserves it benefits. The distribution will commence next week.”
However, this announcement did little to quell the residents' concerns. They returned to the police station, demanding immediate action.
The food, along with other supplies such as blankets and mattresses, was donated earlier this year by the government and well-wishers to support vulnerable flood victims.
Yet, it has remained in storage for months, causing growing frustration among those in need.
Non-governmental organisations involved in the donation defended the delays, citing the need for thorough packing and preparation for distribution.
In response to the mounting pressure, these organisations have now committed to distributing the food next week.
