The Senate is now calling on the government to waive hospital bills for persons who have been injured and defray funeral expenses for those who lost their lives, during the anti-government demonstrations that rocked most parts of the country.
In an order paper on Tuesday, the Senate acknowledged the issues raised by the youth and other members of the public on matters of corruption, impunity, and incompetence within state and public appointments.
Other issues of concern raised by protestors as captured in the order paper include the opulent lifestyles of public officers, unemployment, and high cost of living.
The Senators noted that these and many more raised issues by the youth-led movement have bedevilled the country's economy.
The Senate further expressed concern over the loss of lives, maiming, and loss of property that has been occasioned following these protests.
They called on all government ministries, departments and agencies, and constitutional commissions, including Parliament, to put in place austerity measures in undertaking their respective functions.
The fight against corruption has been difficult, as such, the oversight house rallied the Anti-Graft Commission to intensify its efforts.
"We call upon the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and other government multi-sector agencies in the governance, justice, law, and order sector to upscale and make concerted efforts to fight corruption," read part of the order paper.
The Senate also wants the National Police Service (NPS) to cease abductions, unlawful arrests, and extra-judicial killings and exercise restraint in dealing with peaceful and unarmed demonstrators.
Among other pleas are the release of all persons arrested for planning and participating in peaceful demonstrations relating to the enactment of the Finance Bill.
Additionally, the Senate further called on the Judiciary to expedite all cases that resulted from the protests.
"The Judiciary should prioritize and expedite all court cases relating to the enactment of the Finance Bill and the resultant demonstrations."
From the order paper, the Senate considered and recognized all the challenges faced in the country and vowed to make necessary recommendations to address them.
