Kenya Railways has unveiled new features of the new wagon for the Ksh1,500 economy class of Standard Guage Railway (SGR) trains.
In a statement, Kenya Railways revealed that the new trains would have a different sitting arrangement, unlike the current ones where passengers face each other.
It was revealed the seats of the new trains were arranged per row. One row of seats will be facing the destination while the other faces the departure station.
"The new Economy class stands out for several features designed to enhance passenger comfort. Notably, passengers will no longer sit facing each other.
"Instead, the 3 by 2 seating arrangement across the width of the coach will have passengers facing either the departing station or the destination station," read the statement in part.
On the other hand, each passenger will be able to access a charging port during the journey.
There will also be foldout trays that can be used when eating or when working on a laptop.
"Other features include charging ports for each passenger; a baby-changing area for freshening up babies during the journey; foldout tray tables and pocket seats for placing small items," Kenya Railways stated.
The new trains were unveiled a day after the introduction of the premium trains which will be charged at Ksh12,000 between Nairobi and Mombasa.
The premium trains will have reclining seats and entertainment screens amongst others.
"With innovative improvements in freight operations, Kenya Railways is on course to transport 8.8 million passengers annually, comprising 6 million commuters and 2.8 million long-distance passengers," Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar stated.
"Our customers will surely enjoy riding on these coaches. The design and amenities provided are a guarantee of the nature of service we aspire to provide."
