Several congregants were attacked during a service at Deliverance Church in Kisii on Sunday when a knife-wielding man showed up and began unleashing his wrath on the Christian faithful.
Media reports indicate that all was tranquil until the man stormed the church mid-service and stabbed several congregants including the Officer in Charge of the Police Division (OCPD) Kisii Central who was in attendance.
During the altercation, five congregants were injured. However, police officers from the region, having been briefed on the development quickly responded to the situation and restrained the assailant.
The attacker was then arrested and the knife confiscated as police commenced investigations into the matter.
Meanwhile, the injured persons were subsequently rushed to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.
By the time of publishing this article, the motive behind the attack was yet to be established.
Additionally, the police were yet to issue a statement on the incident.
The incident comes a week after another congregation was engaged in a brawl at the SDA Nyabigena Church in Kisii.
Ten worshippers from the church were hospitalised after the fight between two factions escalated during the church service.
According to the worshippers, there has been an ongoing dispute on who owns the church, which was said to have triggered the fight
“All hell broke loose when one of the church elders announced to other faithful that there were traitors who had attended church last Sabbath. As soon as he had finished making the announcement, unknown people stormed the church and started roughing up Christians," a congregant told journalists.
The Police are still probing the case with claims of one faction of congregants at the church being uncooperative in efforts to resolve the dispute.
