Kieni Member of Parliament, Anthony Wainaina, has called upon former President Uhuru Kenyatta to formally pass the mantle of Mt Kenya region's kingpin to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking at a burial ceremony in Nyeri, Wainaina emphasized the need for a smooth transition of leadership within the region to maintain unity and strength.
"We would like for Uhuru Kenyatta to bless Rigathi Gachagua as the Mt Kenya Region kingpin," stated Wainaina.
The lawmaker opined that they could take gifts to the former head of state to appreciate him for leading the country and the Mount Kenya region for 10 years.
"If we get an opportunity, we will take gifts to Uhuru and thank him for leading us for 10 years, then ask him to bless Gachagua."
Wainaina’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among some leaders in the region who believe that Gachagua, with his current political influence and proximity to power, is well-positioned to lead the Mt Kenya region despite his prevailing political woes.
They argue that a formal endorsement from Kenyatta would solidify Gachagua's standing and help align the region's political strategy moving forward.
The call for Gachagua's endorsement comes amid ongoing political realignments and discussions about the future direction of the Mt Kenya region and the country at large as President William Ruto courts the opposition.
Uhuru, who served as president for two terms, has been a central figure in the region's politics, and his blessing is seen as crucial for anyone aspiring to lead.
Wainaina also highlighted the symbolic importance of presenting gifts to Kenyatta as a gesture of appreciation for his decade-long leadership.
"It's not just about politics; it's about respect and gratitude. We want to honour him and ensure that the region remains united under strong leadership," the MP stated.
Uhuru Kenyatta, during his time as president was known for holding meetings with residents and leaders from the region at the Sagana State Lodge to discuss the way forward in the politics and development of the vote-rich region.
