The government has responded to allegations of mistreating athletes after the Malkia Strikers, Kenya's national women's volleyball team, were reportedly left stranded at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) upon their arrival from France.

The incident raised concerns and sparked outrage on social media, prompting an official statement from the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK).

Upon landing at JKIA, the Malkia Strikers, along with other athletes, did not find the anticipated transportation arranged by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy & Sports.

Without the promised bus, some team members revealed that they were forced to arrange private means of transport to their respective destinations, leading to widespread criticism and demands for accountability.

In a statement released earlier today, NOCK addressed the situation, clarifying the events surrounding the team's arrival.

"The 8th group, including the swimming team and Malkia Strikers, arrived safely in Kenya last night. As with all other arriving teams, they were welcomed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy & Sports, and transport and accommodation were provided for all #TeamKenya athletes," NOCK stated.

The committee explained that the athletes resorted to using private means to meet their loved ones after a long stay in France.

"Many athletes chose to visit their loved ones after weeks of training and competition, which is entirely their choice."

The committee emphasised that the government continues to ensure the safe arrival and departure of athletes, with the Paris Olympics still ongoing.

"With days remaining in the Paris Olympics, we continue to ensure that athletes arrive and depart safely and receive the utmost care from the government," the statement added.

Despite this, the absence of the designated Team Kenya bus at JKIA drew significant criticism.

Questions were raised on social media about the whereabouts of the transportation meant for the national teams.

"Where is the Team Kenya bus meant for our Paris Olympics national teams? Malkia Strikers have landed from France and some are opting to get private means to their final destinations. Why?" Read a tweet of veteran sports journalist Tony Kwalanda that garnered considerable attention.

The incident has cast a spotlight on the logistical arrangements for Kenyan athletes, prompting calls for improved coordination and communication between the relevant authorities.
