The family of 23-year old Samson Mutunga Wambua is seeking justice after their son was shot by a police officer on Friday inside the Kilimambogo Police Post in Thika, Kiambu County.
The 23-year old while narrating his ordeal to journalists revealed that he had been wrongfully arrested alongside his two friends after they were mistaken to have committed a crime.
"We met with two officers from a security company who asked if we had seen a motorbike being ridden by someone trying to flee. We replied that we had not encountered anything like that. Moments later, a vehicle from the security company pulled up "
"It was at this point that the officers working with the security company accused us of being thieves and demanded that police apprehend us on trespass charges," the victim stated.
According to the victim's narration, while in the holding cell, the victim and his friends were tortured and whipped.
Moments later, as narrated by Wambua, the officer proceeded to rough up one of his friends to the point he started nosebleeding. Sensing that this was incriminating and likely to land him in hot soup, he let the injured friend go.
As this was happening, there was another officer at the station waiting to take over shift. He took over command, and it was this juncture that the officer who had just been relieved went straight to the cell and shot at Wambua in the ear unprovoked.
The victim stated that the law enforcement officer was allegedly drunk when he fired the shot.
Speaking to journalists, Wambua's mother Stella Wanzila called upon the relevant authorities to take appropriate action to ensure that justice is served.
"My son was shot for no reason. He had not committed any crime. I appeal upon Interior CS Kindiki to fight this battle for me because I am a widow and my son was our family's breadwinner," she appealed.
Joakim Njama, the Ngoliba Member of County Assembly (MCA), where the Wambua family hails from joined residents in demanding justice to be served.
"Police have a responsibility to serve Kenyans not to brutalise them. Let justice be served," he stated.
