Dorcas Oduor and Beatrice Askul have been approved by the National Assembly to proceed to occupy the positions of Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary of East Africa Community (EAC) Affairs and Regional Development respectively.
Once she is sworn in, Dorcas Oduor will become the first female Attorney General in the Republic of Kenya. Meanwhile, Beatrice Askul will be the first lady from Turkana County appointed to serve in the cabinet.
The National Assembly gave a green light to the duo, adopting the reports of the Committee on Appointments led by Speaker Moses Wetangula.
As soon as they assume office, the cabinet will be 1 Cabinet Secretary away from full constitution with President William Ruto yet to nominate another person after the Committee on Appointments rejected Soi Lang'at.
Endorsing the nominees, Minority Leader Junet Mohammed noted that the two demonstrated competence for the positions they had been tapped.
“Dorcas is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 15 years experience and distinguished legal practitioner. Askul is a career civil servant with vast experience on social governance of arid and semi-arid lands,” Mohammed vouched adding that their experience will be useful in their new assignments.
On his part, Gatanga Legislator Edward Muriu testified Oduor’s professionalism intimating that he has crossed paths before with her as a legal practitioner in the AG chambers.
“She knows all the cracks and corners in the AG chambers. The AG chambers is the largest law-firm, it requires somebody who has got the intricacies of the running of that organization,” Muriu emphasized.
Nyando lawmaker Jared Okello said the two are a perfect fit for their assignments. Having known them for some time, he expressed confidence they will do a good job.
“I have full confidence in these two ladies that I have known so well over the years. I support and I congratulate these two wonderful women,” he added.
Loima lawmaker Protus Akuja referring to the appointment of Beatrice Askul as CS for EAC, expressed gratitude to the president for considering an appointee from a marginalized area to serve in his cabinet.
“Those of us from the marginalized communities need opportunities of this nature to show our ability to serve Kenyans and portray the regional balance and the diversity of our Republic,” he remarked.
Joyce Bensouda, the Homabay Woman Representative commended the President for appointing women into leadership positions.
