Detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday arraigned an alleged notorious carjacker at the Mombasa Law Courts.

The middle-aged man was arrested by DCI detectives from Changamwe on allegations of breaking into a car and making away with Ksh1.4 million.

In a DCI statement, the suspect is said to have broken into a Nissan X trail which was parked outside a supermarket in Mombasa on June 26 this year.

The suspect reportedly accessed the vehicle through its driver's door before reportedly stealing the money. Following the incident, detectives immediately launched a manhunt for the thief.

In a well-coordinated operation, the DCI officers from Lang’ata successfully cornered the suspect at his hideout in Nairobi and arrested him.

They then handed him over to their Changamwe counterparts, who swiftly arraigned him at the Milimani Law Courts in Mombasa to face the charges.

While issuing the update, Kenyans were cautioned to be wary of carjacking, which is currently on the hike. According to the DCI, vehicle prowling, also known as theft from motor vehicles, is a crime that occurs when thieves take advantage of opportunities.

To protect one's self and their vehicle from carjackers, Kenyans were advised to Install anti-theft devices, and always park in safe, well-lit, and fully visible areas.

"Before parking your car, make sure to remove or hide anything that a thief might find attractive,"  the DCI detectives advised.

"Also, remember to close your car windows and doors, lock your car, and take your keys with you."

The DCI while advising the public, assured Kenyans of its efforts to combat car break-ins and theft and deal with perpetrators decisively.

"The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains resolute in its efforts to combat car break-ins and theft, and perpetrators will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law," noted detectives.
