Jackline Mwambire, a teacher from Malindi, Kilifi County was invited to the Summer Camp in Baku, Azerbaijan, which brought together bright minds ahead of the COP 29 slated for November later this year.

The invitation was in recognition of her outstanding work in eco-school initiatives at Learning Hub School where she teaches. Some of the initiatives include making fuel-efficient stoves, effective disposal of waste and recycling of plastics.

The camp which took place in early September, brought together representatives from eco-schools from across the world to deliberate on matters revolving around climate change.

Speaking after returning to Kenya at Learning Hub School,  Mwambire pledged to advance the environmental conservation agenda to create awareness of the need to be more responsible amid notable developments on the climate change front.

Learning Hub School is run by a non-profit organization, ‘Make a Difference’ that empowers children from vulnerable families.

Learners from privileged backgrounds support their counterparts from humble homes which goes on to ensure deserving children get decent education.

Mwambire noted that the knowledge she learnt will come in handy in furthering efforts to conserve the environment, especially among learners. At the Summer camp, Mwambire and her fellow attendees received extensive training on climate change and smart environmental conservation techniques.

“I will use the knowledge to educate our students and communities on the importance of conservation and how we can all contribute to combating climate change,” she stated at the event.

Evans Mwandoro, a colleague and patron of the Ecosystem Club at Learning Hub School welcomed Mwambire’s invitation as a great honour not only to the school but also the whole country.

“We are thrilled that one of our own had the honour of representing Kenya at the camp,” Mwandoro affirmed.

Mwandoro revealed Learning Hub School was actively involved in environmental conservation. He disclosed the institution has been working with the Progress Welfare Association of Malindi (PWAM) on routine beach and town cleanups on a monthly basis.

To separate garbage for disposal, Learning Hub has launched segregation bins as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability.

On his part, Kate Mwikali, chair of PWAM, lauded the Learning Hub School and the community in general for their dedicated efforts towards environment conservation.
