As the country approaches the onset of short rains from October, the Kenya Meteorological Department on Monday urged Kenyans to brace for occasional rains for the next seven days from September 24 to September 30.
In its seven-day advisory, the weather department disclosed that moderate to heavy rains were expected in the Central Highland region, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Coastal region.
Kenya Met in its detailed report announced that heavy rains were expected in the counties of Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu and Homabay.
According to Kenya Met, the above counties would receive light rains in the morning hours after which heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms would be experienced in the afternoons.
Other counties that were forecasted to experience similar weather patterns include; Busia, Migori, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and West-Pokot.
Meanwhile, moderate rainfall was expected in the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi.
“Intermittent cloudiness is expected in the mornings giving way to sunny intervals for most of the forecast period. However, afternoon and night showers are likely to occur over a few places,” read part of the advisory.
The coastal counties of Mombasa, Tana-River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale were also projected to experience rains in moderate amounts.
Temperature Advisory
In its temperature advisory, the meteorological department cautioned residents living in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley and the South-eastern lowlands to brace for overly cold nights.
The meteorological department noted that the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi were expected to experience cold nights of below 10°C.
Similarly, high daytime temperatures of more than 30°C were expected in the Coastal region, the South-eastern lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
The counties in these regions include Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita-Taveta.
"Stay updated with local advisories and plan your activities accordingly," the meteorological department advised.
