A speeding vehicle claimed the lives of a 32-year-old mother and her 9-year-old son on Friday morning along the Sagana-Karatina road.
The duo was waiting for the school bus to pick up the boy and ferry him to school when the vehicle ran them over ending their lives instantly.
Reports indicate that the speeding vehicle was a milk pickup heading from Sagana to Karatina.
Moses Koskei, the Kirinyaga Sub-county police commissioner confirmed the incident and added that the pick-up driver had since surrendered to the police at Kiangwaci Police Station.
"We have taken the body of a 32-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son to Kibugi Funeral home waiting postmortem and the vehicle has been towed to Sagana Police Station," he said.
Following the accident, angry residents took to the highway to demonstrate the state of the road.
According to them, the road contractor had failed to meet the requirements for installing road bumps in the area despite the presence of numerous schools in the area and several attempts to reach him.
The residents told the media that they had demanded a meeting with the Chinese contractor to explain why he had failed to respond to their concerns.
"We want the contractor to come here and cut the road grills and erect speed bumps. We have been writing several letters to him in vain," one of the demonstrating residents said.
"Accidents along this road are caused by speeding vehicles and the Chinese contractor has failed to erect bumps on the road despite children needing to cross the road to get to school," another one added.
The latest accident adds to a string of deaths which stakeholders have attributed to many factors including the poor state of roads and reckless driving.
Over 2,000 people lost their lives on Kenyan roads in just the first 6 months of 2024 according to a report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) with over 10,166 others left nursing injuries all from 11,502 crashes.
