Three people lost their lives after a motorcycle they were travelling on was involved in a head-on collision with an incoming military truck in Elgeyo Marakwet.
The incident that took place on Saturday in the Kerio Bomde area within Endo Ward saw the three victims die on the spot.
Reportedly, the military truck was fetching water for officers stationed in the neighbouring military camp before colliding with a motorcycle that had three passengers on board.
The driver of the truck did not sustain any injuries.
In a statement to the press, area police commander Zablon Okoyo confirmed that the accident took place at the Kerio Valley Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) school.
“At a point near the KMTC area in Tot (the truck) got involved in a road accident that was fatal at the end," police commander stated.
Okoyo further hinted that the military truck was ferrying water for domestic use from a nearby center.
"I think (the truck) was from Soko Bora carrying water for domestic use for the officers,” he speculated.
The commander further urged motorists to be vigilant and observe traffic rules when using the road to avoid similar incidents in the future.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Tot Sub County Hospital. Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have not yet issued a statement.
The National Transport & Safety Authority (NTSA) estimates that 3,000 people die in road accidents every year, with many of the accidents occurring on weekends, during festivities and public holidays.
NTSA attributes the deaths to a breach of road safety regulations and human errors mostly caused by motorists.
