President William Ruto on Wednesday appointed former Nation Media and Standard Group journalist Munyori Buku as the new Head of the Presidential Communications Service.
Before this appointment, he served as the Secretary for Public Communications at State House. Buku possesses a wealth of experience in Strategic Communications and Media with over 26 years of experience working within both the public and private sectors.
Other notable roles Buku served previously include; Senior Director of Public Communications at State House, Director of Communications in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Finance, and Editorial Manager at the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board.
In the private sector, Buku held key editorial positions, including Managing Editor at the Standard Group and Sub-Editor at the Nation Media Group, among other senior roles.
His career began in education, where he worked as a teacher in several high schools across Kenya for seven years between 1990 and 1997 before transitioning to media and communications.
In October 1998, he joined the Nation Media Group where he worked for three years up to 2003 when he quit and joined the Standard Media Group. At Standard, Buku worked as a Managing Editor for the weekend editions.
After working at Standard Group for six years, Buku was appointed as the Director of Communications at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister where he worked for two years before quitting for a top State House job.
In 2013, he was appointed as the Senior Director of Public Communications at the Office of The President where he served for seven years before resigning in 2022.
Buku holds a postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Education (Arts) from Kenyatta University.
This comes after President William Ruto in July during a televised interview complained that his communications team had failed due to the finance bill's communication mishaps.
According to the Head of State, his communication team failed to counter misinformation flying around on the piece of legislation including some proposals that were not in the document.
"We did not explain ourselves better. I am sure my commutation team failed and that we did not have a proper communication architecture," President Ruto told the press during an interview with journalists at State House.
