A man was on Friday arrested in Narok Town for impersonating a KDF sergeant after members of the public reported their suspicions to the local authorities.

The residents claimed that the man had been terrorising the residents while posing as a military officer for a while.

A woman who had been living with the suspect for a few days before his arrest told the police that the man would go to undisclosed places of work during the night and then spend his whole day sleeping in the house.

While confirming the incident, Narok Central Sub-county commander John Momanyi stated that they believed the woman was unaware of the man’s criminal deeds, saying, “The woman has lived with the man for a few days, she doesn’t know his origin or his real name.”

Upon a thorough search of the residence in a bid to identify the suspect, the officers recovered several ID cards belonging to different people and uniforms from both the Kenya Airforce and the Kenya Army.

Since there were no matches for the suspect in any of the KDF databases, the suspect was fingerprinted and the data sent to the National Registration Bureau in order to unmask his real identity.

Members of the public had reported that the man, who had been renting a house near Total Estate in Narok was a part of a criminal gang which could explain the other uniforms found in his house.

Momanyi thanked the residents for remaining vigilant and reporting their concerns to the authorities, urging landlords to also take note of their tenants’ backgrounds before allowing them to integrate into their communities.

“I call upon landlords to have a database of their tenants. This includes their identification numbers and phone numbers so that it can be easy to detect criminals who live amongst us,” he said.

Narok town has in the recent months been riddled with suspicious murder cases reported in different parts of the town leaving the residents gripped with fear, which might have sparked their quick suspicions over the suspect.

In September alone, Narok reported a total of 10 bizzare murders with all the deceased persons spotting identical cuts in their body leading the police to believe that the killings were conducted by a gang using crude weapons to prey on residents during the night.

However, police say that key suspects in the murders have already been arrested and forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) awaiting prosecution.
