Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has come out with a fresh demand after controversially getting booted from the Public Accounts Committee.

Alai, while announcing his resignation from all the Nairobi City Assembly committees on Saturday, October 12,  faulted Speaker Ken Ng’ondi for allegedly defying court orders.

"The blatant disregard for the law undermines the integrity of the assembly and the trust placed in us by the citizens of Nairobi," he said in a statement obtained by Kenyans.co.ke.

According to the outspoken MCA, his woes began after allegedly speaking up against graft before the Senate Public Accounts Committee.

Alai, who is a member of the Energy and ICT Committee as well as the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Committee, insists that the only way he will make the return is if due court processes are followed.

In April, Alai, alongside Ngei MCA Redson Otieno Onyango moved to court to challenge Speaker Ng’ondi's decision to reconstitute House committees, arguing the decision was unlawful and unconstitutional.

At the time, the pair argued that their ejection from the committee was not warranted, and was instead a ploy by their political adversaries to settle some of their differences.

The Nairobi County Assembly has come under scrutiny in recent months over alleged mishandling of finances. In September, the committee ignited debate online after acquiring a gold-plated mace worth Ksh 33 million.

Further back, in April, the Auditor General was requested to conduct a detailed investigation into the financial records of the Nairobi City County Assembly dating back to 2020. This was after the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was called to conduct an inquiry into the misappropriation of KSh1.3 billion allocated to the County Assembly.

The Assembly was unable to efficiently account for the Ksh 1.3 disbursed during the 2020-2021 financial year since there were no supporting documents to back some of the expenditures incurred within that time.

Speaker Ken Ng'ondi and Nairobi County Assembly Clerk Edward Gichana were particularly under siege regarding their administration's receipt of four adverse audit opinions.
